Weekly Update 12/14/08

Greetings!

The Class of ‘09 will be the subject of ongoing announcements over the next few months....starting with
CONGRATULATIONS to Jonathan Monroe who has been accepted to Manhattan Marymount College with a $24,000 academic merit scholarship!

Parents of underclassmen of all ages should mark their calendars for Saturday, January 10th at 2:30 PM. As part of our Open House open to the public (which is also a great way for our own families to check out other divisions of our school) we will be running a session detailing Camelot’s strategic college/career guidance program. Never has it been more important for students to find, select and be accepted to the college that is the right fit for them. Camelot students typically graduate prepared to enter college with many dual enrollment college credits already under their belts and with outstanding merit award offers to attend colleges. Please join me to learn more about our comprehensive and strategic guidance program - truly one of the “jewels” of Camelot.

Check out our website for
pictures of the Middle Grades Sound to Sea trip.

Go, Knights- we had one win and one loss last week - both games hard fought. Thanks to everyone who turned out in support - it makes a real difference. Our last home game before the break is Monday at 4 PM. The team has off on Tuesday and practices on Wednesday and Thursday (late). PLEASE NOTE THERE IS ONE PRACTICE SCHEDULED OVER BREAK - Friday, Jan 2 at 11 AM and ONE GAME on Monday, January 5th. Players will get more details from Krista this week.

Other important facts about the week:

Morning Meeting will be graced by the presence of many parents making presentations for our
Holidays Around the World program. Thank you, in advance, for sharing with us.

Middle Grades students have exams - Monday-Thursday

Thursday is the deadline to order pizza for January!

Friday at 2:30 both bands will perform for the student body (parents may drop in). They will share the holiday tunes that they will be performing at Northgate Mall on Saturday at 2 PM. PLEASE COME TO THE MALL TO SUPPORT OUR BAND AND OUR SCHOOL!

Monday, January 5th is the tuition due date for many families on the early-re enrollment plan. PLEASE NOTE THAT SCHOOL IS CLOSED ON THIS DAY. Please see the letter sent home from Wendy to make arrangements.

School closes Friday at the usual time and reopens for students on Tuesday, January 6th.
We hope you have a wonderful holiday and a safe break!

Best,

Thelma

Weekly Update 12/7/08

Greetings!

Congratulations to eighth grader Liz Reeder who was our top scorer on the American Mathematics Competition for grades 6 to 8! Liz earned a mark of Distinction, meaning that she ranked in the highest scoring group nationally. Second place in our school was shared by seventh graders Elisabeth Parker and Brian Powell, and third place winners were Megan Rusconi-Warner, Josh Stallings, and Aaron Daniels Freeman. Aaron Daniels Freeman and Alex Berro earned Merit awards, indicating that they were among the top scorers in the sixth grade. We had great participation with 11 students competing, and all deserve a round of hearty applause!

Kudos to
Module 4 Merit Award recipients: Toyin Tosh, Angela Dodson, Justice Lamphear, Carson Molaro and Stacy Powell. Also, congrats to Module 4 Honor Roll students: Aaron Daniels-Freeman, Olivia Arges, Michelle Hill, Elisabeth Parker, Brian Powell, Zachariah Claypole White, Max Fried, Lennon Klinger-Mehrbach, Bri Oleson, Joshua Pettway Hinton, Liz Reeder, Megan Rusconi-Warner, Sarah Chetty, Amber Rogers, Ryan Siebens, Kathryn Wilkes, Ian Reid, Michael Berro, Amanda Stevens, Rita Glynn and Jonathan Monroe.

Thank you to everyone for the support of the basketball team fundraiser for new uniforms. Basketball players are reminded that their proceeds and any unsold books must be turned in to Krista by noon tomorrow (Monday). The sale of the coupon books went very well and the team should be sporting their new attire soon! As an additional way to support our team the home game this Wednesday at 4 PM (“home” is Yates Baptist Church gym on Old Chapel Hill Road) will be the focus of our next Spirit Day. (Note - this is a calendar change - Spirit Day was originally scheduled for Monday.) Students are asked to wear the school colors of purple and gold on that day and any 5th-12th student with parent permission will be transported to the game after school. Younger students will require a parent chaperone. Parents are asked to pick up from Yates by 5:30 PM. Please send me an email if you give permission for your 5th-12th grade student to be transported to the game on Wednesday.

Parent Service Opportunity: We are looking for guest speakers for Holidays Around the World the week of December 15-19. This is the perfect opportunity for families who have lived in another part of the world to share their stories. In a 5-10 minute presentation, speakers share their holiday customs, foods and traditions with the student body at Morning Meeting. Contact Wendy for more details.

Have a great week!

Best,

Thelma

Weekly Update 10/26/08

Greetings!

Congratulations to ninth grader
Ryn Wilkes who has been awarded the Girl Scout Silver Award. In order to win this award Ryn needed to demonstrate self-discipline, time management, originality, initiative and complete a long-term service project.

Also, congratulations to
Ryan Siebens whose name was inadvertently left off of the Module 2 Honor Roll list.

We’re entering a big week of teacher attendance at professional conferences. On Monday and Tuesday Ms Kelly and Ms Michelle will be attending a conference for elementary teachers, on Thursday and Friday Mr Dan will be at a science teachers' conference and on Friday Ms Annie will attend a math teachers' conference! I’m really proud that our school supports this kind of professional development - it is reenergizing to our teachers and keeps our classrooms in touch with best practices from across the country and the world.

Tomorrow (Monday) the
basketball season starts with after school practices at Yates. Please note the schedule that was sent home - pick up on Monday and Wednesday from Yates at 5:30 PM, pick up on Tuesday at 7:15 PM. On Tuesdays students have the option of leaving school and meeting at Yates by 5:30 PM or of staying for study hall and being transported by the school at 5 PM. In order for players to participate they must have their paperwork turned into the office. We have a HUGE season lined up with more games versus more schools than ever.

Mid Semester is this Friday. Mid-semester grades/warnings will be mailed home the following week. It is important that students use this week to get caught up on any outstanding assignments so that the grades recorded will be an accurate reflection of student standing. This is especially important for seniors as these grades will be requested by colleges.

Friday is also a big day in terms of special activities that are planned. The Lower School will celebrate Fall Festival with a host of special activities from disco to face painting. The older students and parents will be supporting these activities under the leadership of Miss Kelly. Please note that students have the option of wearing costumes but they must adhere to school-appropriate guidelines which prohibit anything gory, weapons, ghosts, witches, devils, etc. Middle and Upper School students will be attending the Nasher Art Museum on Friday morning under the leadership of Ms Celia. Students will go home with permission slips tomorrow that need to be returned on Tuesday. Please note that parent drivers for this trip need to arrive at school by 9:15 AM and can expect to be finished by 11:30 AM.

Check out
www.Healthelunchkids.com for the many new options for larger appetites and for the Halloween specials.

Finally, the
soccer finale celebration has been scheduled for Thursday, November 6 at 5:30 PM at the Golden Corral by Target. Soccer players will be treated to dinner and we’ll gather to recognize the hard work and growth of everyone on the team.

Have a great week.

Weekly Update 10/12/08

Greetings!

Thanks to everyone - especially our incredible faculty - for the great work in conferences last week. A huge thank you to teacher Lori Hilliard who covered things magnificently in my absence. My daughter and I got back from our college trip last night - saw four colleges - ruled 2 out - great testimony to the need to visit campuses in person. The school she was most interested in before the trip was ruled out in five minutes and a school she thought she had no interest in has made the “short list” It is a lot of work to check out colleges thoroughly and well - and it is never too early to start!

Thank you to all of the parents who sponsored an Upper School student for a job shadow experience this week. Students are reminded to bring the completed job shadow forms in to receive credit for the experience.

Congratulations Camelot folks on the production of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Iolanthe this weekend at the Community Church of Chapel Hill (106 Purefoy Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514). The show features Camelot students Lennon Klinger-Mehrbach and Lance Wilkes as Peers, and Ryn WIlkes as the Fairy Fleta. Our performance instructor, Glenn Mehrbach, produces, directs and provides musical direction for the show. The final performance is today at 3 PM - check it out!

Tomorrow the Upper School has a “specials” day. Students signed up in conference for one of three day-long special activities. Please be sure to dress according to the activity selected and students on the PE trip need to bring a lunch. Seniors are to report at 11AM tomorrow with ACT materials and college visit report forms in hand.

Students of all ages are reminded to
return their completed Fitness Logs tomorrow!

This week is
Club Preview Week. Students who are eight years old and older can choose from the selection of offerings listed on the handout sent home at conferences. (Second semester we will be adding clubs for our youngest students.) For this week, students who participate will be billed the usual after school fee. Starting next week participation requires enrollment for the semester. NOTE - we have added a photography club for students in grades 5-12 that will meet on Fridays from 4-5 PM. Parent/phtogorapher Simone Degan will lead this club starting this Friday. ALSO NOTE - the newsletter club does not start until NEXT week.

Soccer practice is this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, as usual. The tournament is Friday-Saturday, times to be determined.

Parent drivers needed this Friday, October 17 for SR MAPP/Middle Grades trip to the Asheboro Zoo. If you can transport three or more students and would like to earn Parent Service by transporting/accompanying these classes to the zoo on Friday please let me or teacher Kelly Grove know ASAP. You do not need to have a student in one of these classes to participate.

This
Saturday, October 18, all 10th, 11th and 12th graders need to be on campus for testing. The 10th and 11th graders need to arrive by 8 AM for the PSAT test. The 12th graders need to arrive by 9 AM for the final ACT practice test. NOTE - the “real” ACT test is the following weekend, Saturday, October 25. (NOTE-if the soccer tournament schedule presents any conflicts with this testing schedule students need to see me immediately to make alternate plans.)

Have a great week!

Best,

Thelma

Update 9/28/08

Greetings! Thanks to everyone for the great turnout at Back to School Night. I have received more positive feedback emails since that event than ever - I’m thrilled that you are as appreciative of the great teaching team we have as I am.

Welcome to new students
Georgia Brooks (Grade One), Jung-In Yoon (Grade 10) and Jung-Woong Yoon (Grade 12). Interest in our international admissions as well as our traditional admissions is going strong. On Saturday we have our first Open House of the season from 10AM - Noon. Please tell your friends and be sure to take credit for the referrals so as to realize the tuition benefit for any enrollments that result.

Congratulations Camelot Knights -our soccer team won their first game of the season on Friday, 3-2, versus Hopewell Academy. Way to go Ryan Felton, David Achin and Michael Berro (our goal scorers) and teammates for a great showing!

Huge thanks to the following parents for their help in running our successful Book Fair:
Marcy Hartman, Barbara Berro, Myra Stallings, Lia Gilmore, Karen Fried, Amy Daniels, Tiffany Fullwood, Barbara Claypole, Sally Fessler and Sherri Narin. Also, thanks to the many families who supported the fair with their purchases for their children and our classrooms. Of course, the event couldn't have taken place at all without the support of Miss Denise and the HUGE organizational effort of Scott Mitchell.

Early Re-enrollment is going very strong and Wednesday is the deadline. Almost 50% of families in their second or subsequent year at Camelot have already signed up for this tuition-saving plan. Families in their first year at our school should call Scott to gain a better understanding of the benefits of this plan.

Afterschool clubs will launch the week AFTER conferences (October 13) to allow us time to match student interest with club sponsors. I am still looking for a parent to sponsor a CHESS club and we could use one more parent-preferably with skill in photography - to offer an outlet to our group of photojournalists wanting to publish a school newspaper.

As you heard at Back to School Night,
Miss Krista is accepting donations of your underused athletic equipment and Mr Glenn is hoping to borrow two keyboards (one at least 61 keys and one at least 76 keys) for the performance groups.

Please note that the
Physical Activity log sheets sent home by Miss Krista start this week and are due each Friday, starting this Friday.

Upcoming Schedule Items:

School closes this Friday at 3:15 PM (pick up by 3:30 PM) for a teacher meeting to set up for conferences. Optional Care is available by prior reservation - right now enrollment is low and subject to cancellation.

Soccer games this week - Wednesday (Home) and Friday - (Away - need drivers - please email me-depart Camelot at 3 for a 4:30 game. Return to Camelot around 6:30 PM). Please note that there is a League tournament on October 17-18 so practices will continue until that time. After the close of the season we’ll plan a celebration for the players and adults for all of their hard work.

Of special note -
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday soccer practices will be held, as usual, during conference week (week of October 6). Families should make arrangements to get students to/from the field and communicate any conflicts directly with Coach Dan.

Next week (week of October 6):
Monday - Seniors have 3 hour ACT class (9 AM - Noon) followed by their individual conferences in the afternoon. The rest of the week is to be used for college visits, applications, etc.

Monday - Friday - Upper School is closed for parent conferences
Tuesday - Friday - Middle Grades is closed for parent conference (Optional Care available by prior reservation - right now Tuesday enrollment is low and subject to cancellation)

Wednesday- Friday - Lower School is closed for parent conferences (Optional Care available by prior reservation)

Note: Homework IS given during Conference Week. Upper School students are also expected to get significant work done on their Academic Fair paper. AR books are also assigned during this time. Finally, Upper School students will be offered job shadow opportunities during this week.

Have a great week.

Healthelunchkids Update - this week’s menu has new items that include a Curry Chicken Salad Wrap and Asian Chicken Salad. There are now 5 adult options each day.

Weekly Update 9/14/08

Greetings!

We’ve completed
another great week of school Most pretesting is wrapping up and on more than one occasion this week I have heard the teachers talking to each other about the excellent preparation they are finding in returning students who have advanced from one level of the school to the next. Upper School math teacher Annie told me she is thrilled that initial pretest results reveal a very high level of retention in those students who went through Basics Boot camp last year. Middle Grades teacher Michelle stayed late on Friday because she was in the midst of grading pretest results and she was so excited about the results she didn’t want to stop grading! You’ve got to love the dedication of our talented teachers!

Now we are taking all of these pretest results and adjourning to faculty retreat this Thursday and Friday. As you know,
school is closed on those two days so that we can discuss each student in the school and fine-tune academic plans as well as scheduling and programmatic issues. Please note that all students came home with a Retreat Feedback Form for parents to complete this weekend. It is important that this form be returned tomorrow so that we can adjust our agenda to reflect issues raised by parents or students. Even if you have no agenda items to give us please return this form, signed, tomorrow so that we know you did see it.

The only students on campus this Thursday and Friday will be those signed up for
Optional Care (by advance reservation) and the seniors who will be in class from 8:15 AM until noon on Friday. On Friday we do have a soccer game - HOME. All soccer players are to meet at the Lakewood YMCA at 3:30 PM. If this presents you with any scheduling/transportation issues please notify us immediately!

Monday (tomorrow - September 15) is the deadline for Costa Rica sign up!
Go to www.educationaltravel.com to revisit the itinerary, pricing and to sign up.

Early Re-enrollment paperwork has been mailed home and has already had a great response. Please note that there are limited spaces for this option that will be filled first come-first served. Several families have asked about using Your Tuition Solution funding to take advantage of this opportunity. The link to their site is http://www.yourtuitionsolution.com.
The online application is simple and without commitment and allows for the best of both worlds - a fixed tuition rate with flexible payment options.

A Few Reminders:

- The Health E Lunch program (
http://www.healthelunchkids.com) has added new adult sized menu options in response to our feedback. Please check it out.

-
Parking lot protocol still needs work. Please do not leave your car unattended in the path of the drive. If you are coming into the building, please pull into a parking space.

To Recap the highlights of this week:

Monday - September 15

- Retreat Feedback Forms due back
from all
- Deadline for Costa Rica sign up
- Early Re-enrollment continues on a first come-first served basis

Weekly Update 9/7/08

Greetings!

Week One of classes was a huge success and we seem to be off to a great start with review and pretesting well underway. The seniors started their on campus ACT class taught by Princeton Review and even braved the weather yesterday morning to take a sample test. Our “specials” teachers -
Glenn (music), Heather (art) and Roni (dramatic arts/clay) already have the place alive with music and decorative beauty - and even a life-sized horse (a high school art project for the State Fair) is being stabled in the Big Hall. Thanks to the tech help from Dan (teacher/tech guy), we navigated the technical intricacies of setting up online courses from UNC-G, Oklahoma State and Virtual High School to get students going with diverse course offerings from business to philosophy. Krista (PE) has everyone breaking a sweat in classes and our soccer team played their first home game with a burgeoning number of team members and greatly improved skill. Scott (Director of Admissions) has also been breaking a sweat with a flurry of admissions activity on students from near and far. Suffice it to say that in a “walk around” one day last week I felt excited and blessed to see everyone so happily engaged - there is a palpable “feel” from the place on such days and I hope that all of you can experience it both first hand and through your students.

On
Tuesday our first college rep - from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey will be on campus. Interested high school students may attend during 4th period. Drew is a school with which I am very familiar - my sister is a proud graduate and my daughter was accepted there last year along with Cami Leeds (Class of 08). Drew has a generous scholarship program, wonderful internships that take advantage of the 45 minute train commute to NYC, and strong programs in everything from art to science and business. The college rep who is coming was also our most outstanding presenter last year so I encourage you to encourage your student to attend.

Costa Rica is calling.....will you be there? We have picked this exciting school trip as a relatively inexpensive (versus Europe) means to reinforce our Spanish and cultural studies. Celia (Spanish teacher) has worked with the NETC tour company to put together an exhilarating and educational itinerary. NETC is the company we used 3 years ago for the Italy trip. We selected this company due to the high caliber educational focus of their programs and people, the quality hotels and meals and the outstanding refund program (the reason we require the purchase of the Total Surety Insurance- a great product). My entire family (along with several other Camelot families) participated in the Italy trip and it was not only “worth it” - it was outstanding. Not to be corny, but it was life changing. Traveling with just a group from our school was a unique “family” trip - we learned and saw so much on the full itinerary that we all came back wanting to return. I strongly encourage you to discuss and explore this as a family - the DEPOSIT DEADLINE IS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15. Go to www.educationaltravel.com to revisit the itinerary, pricing and to sign up.
User name: Costa Rica
Password: ourcrtrip
If there is interest from the participants we will offer a fundraiser associated with this trip - probably a dining coupon book sale. These fundraisers generally raise enough to cover spending money and a small portion of the travel.

Finally, on
Friday our soccer team has an away game at Franklin Academy (Wake Forest). They will need to depart school at 2:30 PM. Parents of players need to let me know if they would like their student transported to/from the game and also if they are available to help transport others (please respond with number of seat belts available). I’ll confirm via return email.

Have a great week!

Best,

Thelma

Weekly Update 8/31/08

Greetings!

I hope that you are enjoying your Labor Day weekend. Please remember that
school is closed tomorrow, Monday, in observance of the holiday. (No soccer practice either!)

We had a great
Student Orientation. Students seemed to have a wonderful time while settling into classroom and school expectations. Twelfth graders/seniors Rita Glynn, Edwin Leskin, Martin Loomis, Jonathan Monroe and Hayes Perry did a fabulous job of creating and leading activities in drama, music, art, debate and athletics designed to reinforce the school-year theme of RESPECT. All of the teachers did a wonderful job of creating a fun and supportive environment. Special thanks to teacher Lori Hilliard for overseeing much of the planning for these days.

5/18/08

Greetings! I hope you are enjoying the wonderful spring weather.

Thank you to the
jazz band for representing our school so well at Artsplosure yesterday. When our fabulous drummer, David Achin, suffered a broken toe and emergency surgery on Friday this group pitched in to see that the show went on - despite a bad break (bad pun intended). Special thanks to teacher Dan Hill for stepping in to make his jazz drumming debut and saving the day - and also for the use of his house and his equipment on Friday night for an impromptu rehearsal. Also, thanks to band director Glenn Mehrbach for his expertise in making everyone feel confident in spite of the changes. Kudos to band members Channing Pascone, Rita Glynn, Edwin Leskin and Camille Leeds - and their families - for pulling together in this tough situation. GREAT JOB!

Here are some important details about the remaining two weeks:

Paperwork due: If you have not returned your graduation RSVP or your summer reading sheet these things are now overdue. Please return tomorrow.

SCHOOL IS CLOSED NEXT MONDAY, MAY 26, FOR MEMORIAL DAY.

Upper School exams are next Tuesday - Thursday, May 27-29. Students not scheduled for a particular exam should not be in attendance during that exam time but they are responsible for being in school for any portion of the day in which they have commitments (i.e., exam reviews or graduation rehearsals).

Friday, May 30 is graduation rehearsal for all per the instruction sheet you were sent home. Drop off is at the Carolina Theatre and pick up is from Camelot at noon.

All rising 3rd-12th graders should have received the

Speaking of thanks to teachers....this week is
Teacher Appreciation Week. If time permits, drop a note to a teacher who means the world to you - such gestures are always deeply appreciated.

Note from Wendy about
trial of new lunch program....
Camelot Academy will be participating in a Test Pilot Lunch Program with Healthelunchkids.com 2 days a week, for two weeks - Tuesdays and Wednesdays only - beginning May 13th.

The two greatest points of the program: 1. Healthier lunches - low in fat and sodium AND 2. families place their orders online and can order up to a month at a time and as late as 48 hrs before the day you want lunch delivered!

For the test program, you will still receive an actual order form to fill out. If we can approve their lunch program and it is well received - then the school will be added to the Health elunch kids program for the fall and parents will place all orders online starting in the fall semester. Please look for the healthelunchkids flyer and order form that will be sent home with the regular lunch order forms on Wednesday. If you need an email version of the order form, just contact Wendy and she can send it to you.

Parent Service help is still needed for the Spring Festival on May 23 (9 AM - noon) and for graduation on May 31 (8 AM-1:30 PM. Please contact Wendy if you are interested in either opportunity.

Have a great week!

On a personal note...thanks to everyone for the good wishes and support for my daughter, Rita, and I on our college trip last week. As you know, Rita is a junior at our school and she applied to one college - Drew University - for early entry. Although she was awarded almost $100,000 in merit and theatre scholarships (not included in the senior figures listed above) she has made a decision to stay part of Camelot’s Class of ‘09 and to take classes both on our campus and at UNC while preparing for professional and conservatory auditions in January. We greatly appreciate the kind words and support of everyone as we worked through her options.

Best,

Thelma
