Camelot Update 8/28/11

Greetings!

We had a great opening week and are now all oriented and ready to embark on the school year.  I hope that your student had a good first few days and is excited about the weeks to come – I certainly am!  It was truly a joy to welcome back our returning students and we were notably proud of how quickly they reached out to our new students to make them feel welcome and at home.  Thanks to all of the teachers for putting together great programming to help this happen and thanks to all of the parents who helped us execute those plans. Also, thanks to Ms Krista for taking great pictures of much of the fun – check them out:

Tomorrow (Monday) we start with our regular operating hours – doors open at 7:30 AM and close at 5:30 PM. We will begin our official period of review followed by pre-testing. After school study hall starts tomorrow for our older students.

We welcome to our staff Beth Hartley who will be supervising our after school program five days per week. Beth comes with a recreation therapy background and she is looking forward to expanding ouropportunities for fun and learning in the after school hours.

We also welcome to our faculty Catrelle Hampton who will teach Lower and Middle Grades Spanish.  Catrelle has lived and worked in Spain and taught Spanish in many capacities in this country.  I’m confident our students will be entranced by her fun and multifaceted approach to teaching language.

Next week we will welcome to our faculty art teacher Judith Kuegler Webster.  In addition to having much to share from her fascinating childhood being born in Germany and growing up among tribal communities in Nepal and Indonesia, Judith is a gifted artist and teacher.  We look forward to all that will be explored and created under her guidance.

Wednesday at midnight is the deadline to order lunch for the week of September 5th.

Friday is our first home soccer game and as such it is also our first School Spirit Day.  Please wear your school colors (purple and gold) and try to turn out to support our team at Old Chapel Hill Road Park at 4:30 PM. Directions here:

Our Lower Grades music teacher, Teresa Fischer, will be offering private piano lessons for students of all ages. The cost is $40 per hour lesson.
Please contact Teresa at 919-742-3234 or by email, singingwinds@embarqmail.com .

Our annual 5K is coming up on Saturday, October 1st at 10:00AM. Ms. Krista will be in need of some volunteers for the race between the hours of 8:00AM-12:00PM. Responsibilities may include helping people check in, preparing the course, placing signs/cones/flags throughout the course, standing on the course to point people in the right direction during the race, clean-up, time recorders, distribution of water at a water station, and so forth. If you are interested in helping out, please email Krista atKrista@camelotacademy.org.

Camelot Update 8/21/11

Greetings!

This is the first official Sunday Weekly Update of 2011-12! We are poised to have a wonderful year - we are especially excited about the plans and learning opportunities that this year holds.

We welcome to our office staff Wendy Lynne Creel (aka Lynne).  Lynne is married to our new Upper School Spanish teacher, Paul, and we are thrilled to have her wonderful help with our ever-burgeoning administrative tasks.  Please be sure to introduce yourself next time you are in the office.

Lunch orders – everyone needs to set up an account with the Lunchworks Company- old accounts have been cleared. Those who had a credit balance will have it restored shortly.  Accounts may be set up now, orders may be placed as of tomorrow (Monday) and all orders for the week of August 29 (the first week of lunch service) are due by this Wednesday at 10 PM.

Monday is the deadline for Middle and Upper School students to sign up for the October DC trip.  We plan to build a great deal of our fall curriculum with ties to this outing.  Don’t miss this opportunity for your student to see DC as never before – including college visits.

Itinerary and Sign up here:

Soccer practice starts this Tuesday.  Students should meet at Old Chapel Hill St Park from 4:00-5:30 PM.  Krista will be there to help everyone get going and meet Coach Jared.  Still want to join?  Guys and girls in grades 6-12 should contact Krista atKrista@camelotacademy.org to join the team!  (Note – the next practice is this Thursday at Forest Hills Park.)

Music Performance students will be excited to learn that credit classes will be offered DURING the school day this year- as an elective.  These students will also have the opportunity to rotate through the other elective offerings.  An after school option may also be offered, based on interest.  Also in the works, renting a space around the corner from the school for music rehearsals – equipment will be up and ready all the time!  Interested musicians and singers should be prepared to audition on Thursday or Friday of this week.  Students may sign up for a time on Wednesday.  Singers should bring sheet music in the right key.  A cappella singing and singing to pre-recorded tracks is discouraged.  All instruments are welcome and an audition is NOT a commitment to participate – we need to take stock of the interest and offer a plan.

Please remember the special hours and activities during orientation this week.  I look forward to seeing all of you who have yet to attend Parent Orientation on Monday night at 5:30 PM.

Best,

Thelma
