Weekly Update 11/29/09

Greetings!

I hope this finds you at the end of a restful long holiday weekend.

As we celebrate this time of thanks I have a few to share:

-Thanks to
Scott Mitchell for covering all of the bases needed in Wendy’s absence the three days just before break
-Thanks to parent
Julie Smith for coordinating the BackPack Buddies food drive and field trip. The entire project was Julie’s idea and it was a great one. She was ably assisted by teacher Denise Mannette. Thank you to all of our families who made many generous contributions to this worthy cause that feeds Durham’s hungry children.
-Thank you to parent
Paul Kartcheske for leading the kitchen crew at the Thanksgiving Feast with grace and good cheer. Also thank you to parents Kamelia and Kamyar Kheradipir and Bill Carter. who made many behind the scenes maneuvers to see that our meal came out on time and complete with all of the trimmings. These parents were assisted by several other parent helpers – I don’t have the list of names because Wendy wasn’t in attendance – but please know that we are all greatly appreciative.
-Thank you to
Wendy Morris for all of the advance work both in the office and for the Academic Fair and Thanksgiving Feast to assure that although we’d miss her all would come off well.
-Thanks to teacher
Matt Wilhelm for coordinating all of the logistics of the day at the armory for us. Also thanks to Teacher Jill Sugg and Michelle Banal who took the lead on the Academic Fair projects in the Upper School and Middle Grades, respectively. Kudos to teachers Kelly Grove, Liz Benda and Denise Mannette who each did a fantastic job organizing and leading their class projects. Daniel Raimi and Glenn Mehrbach did a great job of providing us music to enjoy and teachers Lori Hilliard, Dan Hill, Jenny Feaster, Celia Battle, Krista Moll and Scott Mitchell all helped with projects and presentations both before and during the event. Roni Peterson and Brittain Peck were not present at the fair but also pitched in before the day.

In the good news department….

Senior Molly Williams is first to gain college acceptance for the Class of 2010. She was accepted to Guilford College with a $40,000 Presidential Scholarship and she was accepted to the Honors College at Western University.

Pictures, pictures – check out the new whole school picture hanging in the Big Hall and check out lots of new updates on the website gallery – Thanksgiving Feast and Academic Fair, Backpack Buddies trip, Sr MAPP Snoopy trip, 5 K run, first basketball game, and Middle School Charlottesville trip.
