Weekly Update 8/31/08

Greetings!

I hope that you are enjoying your Labor Day weekend. Please remember that
school is closed tomorrow, Monday, in observance of the holiday. (No soccer practice either!)

We had a great
Student Orientation. Students seemed to have a wonderful time while settling into classroom and school expectations. Twelfth graders/seniors Rita Glynn, Edwin Leskin, Martin Loomis, Jonathan Monroe and Hayes Perry did a fabulous job of creating and leading activities in drama, music, art, debate and athletics designed to reinforce the school-year theme of RESPECT. All of the teachers did a wonderful job of creating a fun and supportive environment. Special thanks to teacher Lori Hilliard for overseeing much of the planning for these days.

On
Tuesday all 3rd-12th grade students have an 8:30 AM deadline to have met their summer AR reading requirement. The building opens at 7:30 AM for those still needing to take a test but be prepared for a line at the computer!

Also on Tuesday all students who were assigned a
Spanish review book must bring the completed book to class with Miss Celia.

Princeton Review ACT class begins for the 12th graders/seniors. On Saturday, September 6, they will sit their first practice test - at Camelot - -from 9 AM - 1 PM. Please note this and plan accordingly!

Friday is our first Spirit Day! Students should wear school colors (purple and gold) and come out to support our soccer team for their first home game at the Lakewood Y field at 4 PM.

Emma Gilmore, an eighth grader at our school, is featured in a local children’s play called Marmalade Gumdrops. The play runs weekends through September 14. Tickets are $7 and shows are at the Parrish Street Theater (123 W Parrish St - downtown Durham). More info at 919-606-5796.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I’ll see you on Tuesday.
