Greetings!
As we enter our last week of school for 2009 there is much to celebrate while we also tend to many details to wrap things up well.
Congratulations to our Basketball Knights who won both games last week!
Details.....
First, a parking lot reminder….please PULL INTO A SPACE if you are going to get out of your car – even if it is just to wait under the carport - if you leave your car in the line folks behind you who are ready to exit are forced to maneuver in a dangerous manner. Thanks, in advance, for working together on this.
Second, all Middle Grades and Upper School students have received exam review sheets FOR EACH SUBJECT AREA. Please help your student create a good study plan based on the information included in these sheets which include both topics and item types that will be found on the exams. Middle Grades students take exams this week that count as 15% of their semester grade in each class. Upper School students take exams when we return that count 20% of their semester grade.
Third, this final school week of the year brings us one of our most cherished Camelot traditions- Holidays Around the World presentations in Morning Meeting. Thank you, in advance, to parents Shannon Talton, Kimberly Holt, Ingrid Byker, Xueyun Shi and Carol Reiter for sharing their time and traditions with us. An important reminder to all...PLEASE MAKE AN EXTRA EFFORT TO ARRIVE ON TIME THIS WEEK so that your student can experience these presentations and so that his/her arrival does not cause an interruption to the experience of others.

Weekly Update 11/29/09
Greetings!
I hope this finds you at the end of a restful long holiday weekend.
As we celebrate this time of thanks I have a few to share:
-Thanks to Scott Mitchell for covering all of the bases needed in Wendy’s absence the three days just before break
-Thanks to parent Julie Smith for coordinating the BackPack Buddies food drive and field trip. The entire project was Julie’s idea and it was a great one. She was ably assisted by teacher Denise Mannette. Thank you to all of our families who made many generous contributions to this worthy cause that feeds Durham’s hungry children.
-Thank you to parent Paul Kartcheske for leading the kitchen crew at the Thanksgiving Feast with grace and good cheer. Also thank you to parents Kamelia and Kamyar Kheradipir and Bill Carter. who made many behind the scenes maneuvers to see that our meal came out on time and complete with all of the trimmings. These parents were assisted by several other parent helpers – I don’t have the list of names because Wendy wasn’t in attendance – but please know that we are all greatly appreciative.
-Thank you to Wendy Morris for all of the advance work both in the office and for the Academic Fair and Thanksgiving Feast to assure that although we’d miss her all would come off well.
-Thanks to teacher Matt Wilhelm for coordinating all of the logistics of the day at the armory for us. Also thanks to Teacher Jill Sugg and Michelle Banal who took the lead on the Academic Fair projects in the Upper School and Middle Grades, respectively. Kudos to teachers Kelly Grove, Liz Benda and Denise Mannette who each did a fantastic job organizing and leading their class projects. Daniel Raimi and Glenn Mehrbach did a great job of providing us music to enjoy and teachers Lori Hilliard, Dan Hill, Jenny Feaster, Celia Battle, Krista Moll and Scott Mitchell all helped with projects and presentations both before and during the event. Roni Peterson and Brittain Peck were not present at the fair but also pitched in before the day.

Senior Molly Williams is first to gain college acceptance for the Class of 2010. She was accepted to Guilford College with a $40,000 Presidential Scholarship and she was accepted to the Honors College at Western University.

Weekly Update 10/25/09
Greetings!
Welcome to the newest member of our Camelot Family - Sr MAPP student John Henry Baker.
As many of you know, seventh grader Grace Kirkpatrick is spending the semester in New York City due to her dad’s work assignment. The family has turned this time into a marvelous learning adventure that Grace captures beautifully in her blog.
Check it out: http://newyorkfall.blogspot.com/
ILLNESS UPDATE: As of this hour I have heard from several families. Many students who were ill last week are now better. A few from the Upper School are still sick. I haven’t yet been told of any new Upper School illness and so far I have only one report of illness in the Lower School and one on faculty (Krista). If the information I receive later in the day changes this picture substantially I will send another email but otherwise it looks like all divisions of the school will be open tomorrow as usual.
Parent Service Jobs:
- Need porch flowers redone with fall blooms (pansies?) before the November 8 Open House (email me if interested)
-Need parent (s) to review info I have on online auctions and to take the lead on getting such an activity in place as a fundraiser for our scholarship fund (email me for info)
-Mike needs people interested in working on a Saturday morning between now and mid-December to help with leaf raking. Contact Mike directly at Mike@camelotacademy.org.
This week has a lot going on!
Monday-soccer practice at Forest Hills Park
- MID SEMESTER!
Tuesday - Hollins University rep to meet with high school girls
Wednesday - School picture day! Wear your finest!
-soccer practice at Forest Hills Park

WEekly Update 10/11/09
Greetings!
We welcome our newest student and our newest faculty member to our Camelot family. Welcome Logan Faulkner and family to the Jr MAPP classroom and welcome Brittain Peck as our art and Lower School Spanish teacher.
We’ve finished a very busy week of conferences and fine-tuned our student learning plans. Thanks to all of the parents and other conference attendees for their time and input. I personally attended
many conferences across the grade levels and I continue to believe that the time we set aside for this exchange of information is among our most valuable traditions. I also have to say that as I watched the teachers executing these conferences I couldn't have been more proud or impressed. We are very fortunate to have this talented and dedicated group of educators at our school.
The Module 1/2 Honor Roll (grades 6-12) and Merit Award (younger Middle Grades) students will be announced in Morning Meeting on Monday. They are: Molly Williams, Michael Berro, Jung-In Yoon, Ryn Wilkes, Ryan Siebens, Amber Rogers, Sarah Chetty, Meg Rusconi-Warner, Liz Reeder, Josh Pettway-Hinton, Bri Oleson, Lennon Klinger-Mehrbach, Max Fried, Zachariah Claypole-White, Josh Stallings, Rachel Roush, Elisabeth Parker, Olivia Arges, Alex Berro, Ben Kirby, and Angela Dodson and for Merit Awards Danny Sutton and Wyatt Grose.
Congratulations to the Camelot Knights soccer team on their second win of the season last week. As their season is drawing to a close at the end of this month, we are going to run a “fan day” this Wednesday. Students in Middle Grades and Upper School who would like to attend will be transported by the school to our home field at Twin Lakes Park. The game is at 4 PM. Students will be transported back to Camelot for pick up by 5:30 PM. Younger students are encouraged to attend with a parent. Fans who plan to attend are encouraged to wear the school colors (purple and gold). In order for your student to be transported to and from the game by the school I must receive an email giving your permission. The rain date is the following Wednesday, October 21.
Clubs are up and running as of this week. Due to instructor illness last week Sketchpad will meet as a preview week this week and the new meeting day is Thursdays. The following clubs had insufficient enrollment and are canceled for now – but will be reintroduced at a later time:
Running club, Upper and Lower School art club and Songwriting.
The online lunch system has launched – and as predicted we have had a few bumps. The most common problem thus far is with folks trying to set up new accounts without allowing turn around time for the account to be approved. Please remember that if you wish to set up a new
account you should allow 48 business hours for that account to become operational before you place an order. Each week from here on out the order deadline is Wednesday night at 11:59 PM. Ms. Wendy is braced for some discrepancies this week and so we have ordered extra pizza to be
used as a back up for any order mix-ups throughout the week. Please be patient as we iron out any problems – I think that in the long run this system will work better for all involved. We owe a huge THANK YOU to parent (and Camelot alum Class of ‘88) Brennan Stephens for the countless hours he has worked to set up this system over the past several months.
Finally, next Saturday, October 17, all 10th and 11th graders will report to Camelot to take the PSAT. Information and details were distributed at conference. Please let me know if you have any questions.
So…. to recap…..this week…….

Weekly Update 10/4/09
Greetings!
Congratulations to senior Molly Williams who has been named a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Molly’s scores on the PSAT last October have placed her in the top 3.5% of the over 1.5 million students who took the test.
As you are aware, this week is conference week for all Camelot families. As such, there are many schedule implications:
1) Upper School students have no class all week. Middle Grades students only have class on Monday. Lower School students only have class on Monday and Tuesday. No classes for any students this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
2) There is no lunch service this week.
3) The deadline to set up lunch accounts for the first week of online lunch orders is tomorrow (Monday). Lunch orders for the week of October 12 must be placed before midnight this Wednesday. Follow the link from our website for the lunch order form and directions.
4) There are no clubs this week including no Morning Band tomorrow for Middle Grades students.
5) Optional Care is available by prior reservation on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
6) Soccer players need to make their own driving arrangements to the Wednesday and Friday games. There is practice at Forest Hills park tomorrow (Monday). Middle School soccer players will be transported by the school, as usual, to practice. Upper School students (who do not have school tomorrow) should be at the field by 3:30 PM.
7) All Middle Grades and Upper School students have homework over this break. This is not a “vacation” in the way of the Thanksgiving or the Holiday breaks. In order for students to meet their semester goals they will need to work on both Academic Fair and classroom assignments. Parents are asked to check assignment notebooks sooner rather than later during the time off to avoid any last minute stress.
8) All Middle Grades and Upper School students are required to attend their family conference. If a student is not present we will need to reschedule. Please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes ahead of your conference time to review any student work available to you. Also, please plan to stay for about 10 minutes after your conference to complete the Parent Survey. We ask that you not take the survey with you to complete later but that you plan to complete it on the day of your conference. Your candid feedback is very important to us.
9) Camelot Math Advisor Annie Tally is running sessions this week for Upper School students on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and on Friday morning. Students who want to work with a teacher on math assignments or on Academic Fair projects may sign up for small group help at the nominal rate of $9 per hour. Limited space remains. Please call Wendy for to reserve a spot.
Other Items:
The following clubs need more enrollment to run. If you are interested please let Wendy know on Monday before final decisions are made:
Monday - Clay Club and Running Club (may be offered again after soccer season)
Tuesday - Lower School Art Club
Thursday- Sketchpad (note new day) - will run a preview on Thursday, Oct 15
Friday - Song writing and Upper School Art Club
Mr. Glenn is still looking for those needed items for the performance bands. Please let us know if you have any items to donate/lend.
Sign up for Spain trip - deadline is November 1.
Thanks and I’ll see you in conference!
Best,
Thelma

Greetings!
Thanks to everyone for the great turnout at Back To School Night. We hope the evening was informative and useful for you and will set you up to get the most out of your family conference next week. This promises to be another very busy week.
As you know it is CLUB PREVIEW WEEK!

Weekly Update 9/13/09
Greetings!
Congratulations to our Camelot Knights who won their first game on Friday with a score of 2-1 in a game versus Panther FC. What a nice birthday present for Coach Dan!
Thanks to Scott Mitchell and Mike Glynn for their efforts to add historic photos of the Foushee Family (the original owners of our building circa 1916) to our décor. Be sure to check out these glimpses into the past next time you are in the Big Hall.
As you will recall, this is a short week for the students. Here are some reminders:
Monday-
Retreat Feedback forms due back from all families (if you have no feedback please sign and return so we know you saw the form). Also, please don’t email your feedback – it helps with our process if we have a form from everyone (you can print out a response and attach it to the form if you prefer that option to longhand).
Morning Band class begins.
Tuesday-
Lunch order forms sent home for a Wednesday return.
Wednesday –
Soccer game – AWAY
Thursday –
School closed for Faculty Retreat (thanks, in advance, for your support of this important process). Optional Care available by advance reservation – contact Wendy.
Friday –
School closed for Faculty Retreat. Optional Care available by advance reservation – contact Wendy
Soccer game at home. (Reminder – because school is closed for students on Friday, parents should plan to transport to and from the home field.)
Have a great week.
Best,
Thelma

Weekly Update 9/6/09
Greetings and Happy Labor Day weekend!
As I’m sure you are aware, school is closed tomorrow in observance of Labor Day.
Orientation pictures are up on our website - check out the Gallery. Many thanks to Scott Mitchell for making the time to get these photos up quickly at this hectic time of year.
Lunch order forms go home Tuesday for a Wednesday AM return. Remember - you can download a copy of the lunch form from our website. We hope to go “live” with online ordering later this month.
Our soccer team had a great first game - although it wasn’t a win it was a strong start. This week they have two games - on Wednesday at 5 PM at home and on Friday at 4:30 PM away (we are waiting for field location info). Camelot will transport players to both games. Families are expected to provide their own pick up from home games. If your student needs a ride back to Camelot after the Friday away game please respond to this email and we’ll make arrangements.
Music teacher Daniel Raimi is offering private guitar lessons for students ages 6 and up at Camelot. He is also available for lessons in music theory, composition and jazz improv. Lessons will be scheduled for Tuesday and Friday afternoons in the music room. We are truly fortunate to have another such talented and accomplished musician available to work with our students. Learn more about Daniel’s work at his website www.danielraimi.com. (30 minutes lessons @$25/45 minute lessons @$35). To set up lessons contact him at music@camelotacademy.org.
On Friday your student will go home with a Retreat Feedback Form. Please plan to complete this form next weekend and return it on Monday so that your input can be part of our agenda. Specifically, we will be looking for comments or questions about your student’s experience thus far. Thanks, in advance, for making this a priority.
We have our first few cases of the flu reported in our students and faculty. Everyone has been doing a great job of following the protocol we talked through at Parent Orientation and so we hope to minimize the overall impact on our school year.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and we’ll see you on Tuesday.
Best,
Thelma

Weekly Update 8/30/09
Greetings! We’ve emerged from a successful orientation and are eager to get down to the business of classes tomorrow morning. Thanks to all of the teachers for putting together such a remarkable orientation program. Special thanks to all of the parents who helped to unload the luggage of the travelers in the rain on Friday night - way to go with teamwork!
Regular school hours start this week with before and after school programming, including study hall. Please note that next Monday, September 7, we are closed for Labor Day.
Auditions for the music performance class and club will run all of this week. Auditions will be held at lunch and afterschool and everyone who wishes to participate - including those who did last year - need to audition. Students must sign up in advance (sheets are posted in the Big Hall by the stage (Dan’s classroom). Auditions will be for 10 minutes and are available to Upper and Middle Grades students with some degree of expertise on an instrument or with vocals. Students should come with their instrument tuned and ready to play a 1-2 minute piece. Vocalists should bring sheet music and Mr. Glenn will accompany you. Following the prepared piece there will be a brief interview. Audition results will be announced on Tuesday, September 8. Students who audition will be provided an information sheet with details about class schedule, fees and performance dates.
The soccer team has its first game this Friday (September 4) at our home field (Twin Lakes Park) at 4:30 PM. The game is versus Clover Garden School. Monday practice will be at Forest Hills Park and Wednesday practice will be at Twin Lakes. Directions are on the school website. Camelot will transport to all practices and the game. Parents should pick up from the fields.
In honor of the first soccer game Friday is also the first Spirit Day of the year. Students are encouraged to wear our school colors - purple and gold - in a creative manner. Senior Molly Williams will share ideas on the subject in Morning Meeting this week.
Have a great week!
Best,
Thelma
