Camelot Update 4/29/12

Greetings!

What a great week we had!  We took tests, we traveled on trips, we played games and the big kids danced the night away on Friday night!  It was truly a week that showcased the best of what our school is about - everyone working together to accomplish goals, make wonderful memories and support each other.  I cannot tell you the number of heartfelt moments and personal triumphs I was fortunate enough to witness.  Camelot is a special place and you and your children are a big part of what makes it so.  We have much to celebrate and be thankful for as we bring this wonderful school year to a close. Special thanks for the week go to Ms Lori who coordinated our standardized testing AND the school dance, Ms Krista and her parent volunteers who put together a fun and successful Spring Festival that no rain could dampen, Mr Glenn for all of his efforts to make the recording studio gig a hit, Mr Mike and Ms Judith for leading our youngest students on their exciting journeys, Ms Denise who welcomed next year's Kindergarten class to Big Kid School, Mr Scott and Ms Liz who showcased our school at Northgate Mall yesterday, Mr Roni, Ms Lynne, Ms Catrelle and Ms Aisha who pitched in with the testing and Ms Wendy who held it all together in the office - as she does so well - with grace and humor.

Please check out our website for the newest pictures of all of the fun:

As you know, this Friday is the Evening of the Arts, On Tuesday I will see all of the slated acts run and on Friday, during the school day, we will run a dress rehearsal at the theatre at the Hayti Heritage Center. Students will be shuttled to/from the rehearsal via the school bus. Students should be sure to bring all needed materials for their acts on both Tuesday and Friday.

All performers should arrive at the Hayti Center by 6:45 PM on Friday.  We fill the house so come early to find good parking and a seat.  There is a balcony at this theatre  for overflow seating. Directions to the theater are here:

Parent service help needed after the show!  We need load out help with band equipment, props, etc being loaded into vehicles.  Please contact Wendy if you are available to help - wendy@camelotacademy.org.

Have a great week and I'll see you on Friday night!

Best,
Thelma

Camelot Update 4/7/12

Greetings!

I hope that you've been enjoying a great Spring Break.  Please remember that school reopens on TUESDAY, April 10.

All of our travelers have returned - the group from Yosemite, the group from Davidson College and the group from the Bobcats game.  Check out the Yosemite pictures on our website here:

Congratulations to Sarah Chetty on her acceptance to NC State University and to Will Cunningham for his 26K University Merit Award to Eugene Lang College.

The remaining seven weeks of the school year are full of lots of excitement and important events.

Starting this week students in grades 2-11 brush up their test taking skills to get ready for standardized testing at the end of the month (April 25-27).  It is a requirement of the state of North Carolina that private schools give a nationally standardized test.  The test we use, the Educational Record Bureau (ERB)- Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP) is a challenging test that allows us to receive scores normed not just in comparison to a national group but also to a private school group.  The majority of our focus during test preparation time is spent practicing reading and understanding test directions, working under timed conditions, learning test taking strategies, and the younger students also practice responding using "bubble sheets."  Second graders take this test strictly as unofficial practice.  Students in grades 3-11 receive their scores with their second semester grade reports.  I'll remind you closer to the time to be sure that your student comes to school well rested and having eaten a good breakfast on those days.

Students may sign up this week for talent show auditions next week.  Sign up days and times will be posted in the Big Hall.  As in the past, some students will be selected to perform talent show acts at our Evening of the Arts (May 4- please mark it on your calendars now....an absolute highlight of the year!).  Those students who do not perform at the Evening of the Arts will be assigned a Morning Meeting day to perform for the school.  Please help your student keep the running time of his/her act at or under 90 seconds. Students should come to the audition with all necessary materials and with their part memorized (sheet music is OK).  In addition to the talent show acts, all students in Kindergarten, Jr and Sr MAPP will sing/dance and drama and band students will perform.  Art work from students of all ages will also be on display.

Here are some more highlights of things to come:

Wednesday, April 25 -  recording studio gig for both bands
Thursday, April 26 - afternoon - Spring Festival (Ms Krista needs parent volunteers for Parent Service credit.  Please email her directly at krista@camelotacademy.org).
Friday, April 27 - Upper School Semi-formal dance (bake sale starts this week!)
Friday, May 4 - Evening of the Arts
Saturday, May 26 - Whole School graduation/awards ceremony

Juniors and Junior parents - please remember that Student Autobiographies and Parent Perspectives are due this Tuesday, April 10.  Also, Ms Lynne needs SAT registration confirmations from everyone.

Enjoy the rest of your Spring Break and I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

Best,
Thelma
