Greetings!
We are all now "oriented" and ready to settle into our "real" routine on Monday. Orientation was particularly great - and our teachers and guest facilitators did an outstanding job of setting a tone of thoughtful reflection, fun and multi-faceted learning. By Friday our newest members were finding friends and settling in. It is a joy to witness the beginning of great friendships and great adventures.
The theme of our year - What's Love Got To Do With It? - has been set in motion. Camelot has always been a place of hugs, support and taking care of each other. This is our year to celebrate that fact and not let it be taken for granted. It is already evident that many good things will come from this purposeful focus this year. I look forward to seeing it all unfold.
As you will recall, the next couple of weeks will be a period of review and pre-testing. As the year takes form, please continue to provide us with feedback so that by Faculty Retreat (Sept. 12-13) we maximize the opportunity to fine-tune things on behalf of your family.
This week we welcome Tom Mitchell to our staff. Tom will be managing the Specials House and running our after school programming. Many of you know Tom as the son of Director of Admissions Scott Mitchell and also know him from his many years of work in our summer programs. We are thrilled to have Tom rejoin our family in this capacity.
Our soccer team is still open to more players. Young men and women in grades 6-12 are encouraged to sign up. Please find details and registration paperwork here:
Middle and Upper School students who wish to audition for one of our musical performance groups may do so on Wednesday afternoon. Please be sure that students bring instruments and a short piece to play.
Wednesday (midnight) is also the deadline for lunch sign up for next week! Remember - if you are using this system for the first time, you must set up your account by Monday. The link is here:
The RoboKnights Robotics program is currently recruiting for the FIRST LEGO LEAGUE season. The season officially starts on August 27th with the challenge release for “Nature’s Fury.” All interested students who are 9-14 years old will participate in
a meeting at school on Thursday, August 29th at 2:00 PM for an orientation to FLL.
This Friday is the sign up deadline for the Upper School trip to Williamsburg, Va. If you need the forms to do so, please check here:
The Middle Grades trip to the mountains has a sign-up deadline of Tuesday, September 10. You can access the info here:
Our SAT prep class will be starting soon. This optional class is open to 10th-12th graders. To express interest and get more info please contact instructor Frank Newman directly at frank@camelotacademy.org
Speaking of college test prep, it is of note that although the news this week was full of not-so-great headlines about the performance of NC students on the nationally administered ACT test of college readiness, Camelot's Class of 2013 posted "100% ready for college work" on the test of College English Composition and College Algebra. Learn more about this test here:
Finally, we have a Teacher's Pet in need of a loving home. Our Upper School History teacher, Matt Wilhelm, is trying to find a new home for his 7 year-old cat, Luna. She is shy at first, but loves a lot of attention and affection once she gets comfortable. She gets along well with other cats and would be happy to have a new feline friend. However, she probably wouldn't do well with a dog. Luna would be a sweet, gentle, loving addition to your family. If interested, contact Matt at matt@camelotacademy.org. A picture of Luna can be found at this link:
Next weekend is Labor Day weekend! We will be closed on Monday, September 2nd.
Enjoy this picture-perfect weather!
Best,
Thelma
