3/2/08

Greetings and Happy March!

Congratulations to
senior David Hillsman for his acceptance to Wofford College and to senior Camille Leeds for her acceptance to Drew University with a Presidential Scholarship. Also, congratulations to junior Rita Glynn for her acceptance to Drew University with a Presidential Scholarship!

Special thanks to
parent Catherine Parker whose background in teaching was put to excellent use last week when she substituted in our Kindergarten Class. She did a wonderful job and we are very grateful for her help that allowed our flu-ridden faculty to do some much needed recuperating. Beth will be out for another day or two this week but she is doing better and looking forward to her return.

Other items of note:
Starting this week, and for the month of March, all students in grades 2-11 will prepare for our annual administration of the ERB-CTP exams. A few things you should know about this - these tests satisfy a requirement of all private schools in North Carolina to administer a nationally-normed test once a year. This is different from the requirements of the public schools - which give the state-normed End of Grade and End of Course tests. Our preparation efforts over the next few weeks will focus on giving our students practice on things such as working under timed conditions, answering multiple choice items, and general test taking strategies. The emphasis is on “teaching how to take a test” which is very different from “teaching to the test” (implying a cram and jam of the curriculum). You can best support our efforts by helping strike a balance in your student's approach to these tests - it is appropriate to be serious (results are part of the permanent record) but NOT stressed out - promotion is not determined by these scores and all of our students have spent the entire school year mastering the challenging curriculum necessary to do well. When it comes to the actual test days later this month we will need students to come to school rested and having had a good breakfast. If your student has professional documentation stating the need for extended time testing please email me this information so that I can see that proper accommodations are made.

Tomorrow, March 3rd, is the final date for re-enrollment. Please be sure you have taken care of any necessary paperwork. Scott has a long line of visitors waiting to be scheduled as well as many pending scholarship candidates. We greatly value every member of our Camelot family and will do what we can do accommodate any special circumstances you may have but it is imperative that the office be aware of your intentions and/or needs no later than 5 PM tomorrow.

Girls’ volleyball will meet this Thursday, weather permitting. Once parent coach Will Powell gets a sense of the commitment he has from students we will set more regular plans.

Yearbook club will also meet this Thursday. Miss Heather was thrilled with the turnout and enthusiasm in the group that showed up last week.

Have a great week!
